Shaxi Treasure (Click here for Past Performances)
Shaxi Treasure, simply known as "Bodger" to his friends, raced an incredible 75 times, including in Hong Kong. He ended his career as an undistinguished racer
needing a home at the now defunct Bay Meadows in California after winning over $250,000 for his Chinese owner. As shown by the photo, Bodger has another tattoo
that Chinese racers are also required to have.
This 18 year old gelding now spends his days in a herd grazing on the year-round green grass at Paddington Station in Potter Valley, CA.
During the summer
months Bodger is visited by campers that come for dressage, jumping and riding lessons. He is a very gentle and loveable guy when not in the show ring. Bodger was too much of a horse to be used in the camps.
He showed great
promise as a show horse but his over the top competitive nature when in the dressage ring did not work. Everytime he saw another horse coming he felt antagonized and thus
was permanently retired. Sometimes racers cannot get over their racing days and must always be in front or "scare" the other horses and act very dominant. This
is not the rule though and usually the exception. You can try to train it out of them but as in Bodger's case it didn't work.
Update - March 2011
We are sad to report Bodger's passing. He was found in pasture one morning and we assume he died of a heart attack. He had a good few years of well-earned
retirement after winning so much money and will be forever grazing in greener pastures.
