Iona Prospector (Click here for Past Performances)

ADOPTED!!!!

Iona Prospector is a 21 year old gray/roan mare by Native Prospector and whose grandfather was the great Mr. Prospector. Iona raced an incredible 62 times. Her last recorded race was in 1997 at Golden Gate Fields and won nearly 90K which would be more like 200K in today's dollars. Iona is headed up north to our facility at the Geibel Farm. She is a retired broodmare and trained under saddle. Although 21 she looks and acts more like a horse in her teens. She is a very classy lady.

Update: January 2011

Iona has settled nicely into her new life. She has been seen several times by long time supporter Trudy and her daughter Lindsay. Trudy will be adopting Iona and moving her in a few weeks time.

We recently learned that famed Pulitzer Prize winning author Jane Smiley (who wrote the much recommended book "Horse Heaven") was once an owner and we show a photo of Jane with Iona and her filly High Brite Glory. High Brite Glory died in a tragic accident and her former owner has been searching for Iona for 5 years. Chelsey recently contacted us when she finally found Iona listed on our website but Iona was already in line to be adopted by Trudy. Iona will be leaving us shortly to go to her new home in Petaluma, CA. The twist is that Chelsey boards at the same stable where Iona will land!! Trudy and Chelsey are thrilled to have already met as well. What a happy ending for this more than deserving mare.

The sad fact is that at the auction Neigh Savers' Nicole was the sole bidder against a killer-buyer. No one else had any interest in Iona or the other elderly broodmares we bid for other than the killer-buyers that day. These retired broodmares were at great risk.

Update: February 2011

Iona (now renamed "Izzy") was off to her new home. Trudy had actually committed to adopting her in November after the auction but came up to see and ride her several times with her daughter Lindsay before she took physical possession. She was also looking for the perfect stable and she certainly found it! We wish Izzy, Trudy and Lindsay many years of happiness with this very deserving mare. The barn and owners are wonderful and in addition to regular sized horses there are a bunch of minis==miniature horses, mini goats, mini llamas, and mini sheep too. We did manage to contact author Jane Smiley and she was very nice....said that Iona was one of the smartest mares she ever had and sent us photos of some of Iona's babies and updates on where they are today. She is very pleased that Iona is safe.
